Hybrid and university-model schools in Houston

47 listings. Two or three days on campus, the rest at home.

A hybrid or university-model school splits the week. Kids go to a real campus some days, usually two or three, for teacher-led classes and the social side of a classroom. The rest of the week they're home, working through assigned material a parent oversees rather than teaches from scratch. It sits between a co-op and a full private school: more outside teaching than a co-op, less than the full five-day week of a private school.

This fits a family that wants real classroom days without a full week away, or a family easing out of homeschooling toward more structure a step at a time. Cost runs lower than full-time private school but higher than a co-op, usually billed as annual or per-semester tuition. Grades vary by school; some run a single division, others cover K-12 across lower, middle, and upper divisions.

What to ask:

  • How many days a week are on campus, and what the home days actually require of you: teaching, sitting alongside, or just checking work
  • Which agency accredited the school, and whether that agency is TEPSAC-recognized
  • Class size and whether instruction is grade-level or multi-age on campus days
  • What tuition covers and whether it changes with accreditation status

On TEFA: the same accreditation cliff applies here as with a private school. A hybrid school accredited by a TEPSAC-recognized agency, running at least two years at a Texas location, qualifies for up to $10,474 a year (more with an IEP on file). Without that accreditation, the family is capped at $2,000, regardless of how structured or "school-like" the campus feels day to day. One thing worth flagging directly: a newer accreditor built specifically for microschools charges a flat annual fee and is actively moving programs through its process, but the state hasn't yet formally recognized it as an accreditor. A program that has paid for that accreditation doesn't unlock the higher tier until the state does. Ask which agency accredited a specific school before assuming either way.

If two or three campus days sounds like more than your family wants, Microschools & Pods runs smaller and less formal. If it sounds like too little, compare against Private Schools.
