Homeschool co-ops in Houston

A homeschool co-op is a group of families who meet on a regular schedule, usually once or twice a week, so kids learn some subjects together instead of one-on-one at the kitchen table. Parents often teach a class themselves in exchange for their kids attending others, though a growing number of co-ops now hire outside teachers for some or all subjects. For a lot of Houston families, the co-op is the center of the homeschool week.

This fits a family that wants community and some outsourced teaching while keeping most of the week home-led. It's the lowest-cost option on this site for most families, usually billed as a semester or annual fee plus supplies, and it almost always expects a parent to show up, whether to teach, assist, or simply attend. Grades and ages depend entirely on the specific group.

What to ask:

  • Whether it's parent-teach (you lead a class) or hire-teach (you pay and show up)
  • The faith statement, if any, and how strictly it applies to families versus teachers
  • Typical class size and whether there's currently a waitlist
  • The real weekly or twice-weekly schedule, and whether it runs year-round or by semester
  • What a full year actually costs once registration and supply fees are added in

On TEFA: co-op fees are not named on the state's official list of allowable expenses, and this is one of the least settled corners of the whole program. Most co-ops are informal, parent-run groups without a registered business behind them, and TEFA money can only be paid to a registered vendor in the first place, so an unregistered co-op generally can't be paid through the program no matter the category. If a specific class within a co-op is billed through its own registered vendor, that piece may qualify as tutoring or a class fee, but the co-op's general dues typically won't. Ask the specific co-op directly rather than assuming either answer.

If your family wants more structure and more days, compare this against Microschools & Pods. For a single-subject add-on instead of a full weekly commitment, see Classes & Enrichment.
